For rideshare drivers in California, recent years have been like riding a roller coaster.

The home state for multi-billion dollar giants like Uber and Lyft was the first in the U.S. to introduce a labor law that recognizes gig workers as employees, granting them a range of additional benefits.

Uber and Lyft have refused to comply with the measures, and earlier this month, they threatened to suspend their services in California.

An appeals court decision on Thursday allowed more time for the companies but their battle with the unions is far from over.
