Sudden and overnight. Flash floods in northern Afghanistan have killed at least a hundred people.

Officials say the number is likely to rise. Nearly the entire city of Charikar, home to about 200,000 people, was affected. It is the capital of Parwan Province, just north of Kabul.

Rescue workers are digging through mud and rubble, searching destroyed houses for casualties and possible survivors.

Heavy rains in the summer are common in northern and eastern Afghanistan.
