America's relationship with the United Nations is in its worst state in decades, with a sustained departure by the Trump administration from key UN agencies, and a UN leadership treading carefully around its most powerful member.

And with this year's UN General Assembly taking place during a pandemic and in a virtual format, a major opportunity to smooth over differences and engage in direct diplomacy is being missed.
