Should U.S. voters be worried about mail-in voting during the 2020 presidential election?

Absolutely not, says Niambi Carter, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Howard University in Washington DC.

She says there is no proof mail-in voting is more susceptible to fraud compared with other methods of voting.
And she says the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is equipped to handle the surge in mail-in voting anticipated because of COVID-19.

Using absentee ballots, a form of mail-in voting for people living or studying out of state, is a common practice in the U.S. The USPS has provided this service for years.

Although Congress has halted policy changes to the USPS implemented by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, such as the removal of mailboxes and mail sorting machines, Carter says these kinds of actions will impact people’s trust in the USPS.

She thinks after this year's election more needs to be done to educate people about the postal service and mail-in voting.
