Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the coronavirus has killed more people than malaria, HIV, cholera and the flu combined. Among the most affected regions is Latin America. Brazil has reported more than 142,000 deaths, second only to the United States.
Mexico has the fourth highest death toll in the world with more than 76,000, though President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador says there's a downward trend in the number of infections and deaths.
Latin America's’ third largest economy, Argentina, last week reported it had underestimated the number of deaths and now says at least 16,000 people have died. Argentina is among the top five globally with daily infections and deaths.
Across the region, there remain few positive signs. Some countries have begun opening up their economies. Peru has announced it will resume flights to neighboring countries next week with passengers required to take a test 48 hours before travel.
