Forecasters say Hurricane Delta is now a strong Category 2 storm.  Delta has winds of 110 mph (175 kph) and is expected to hit Louisiana Friday evening.

Louisiana residents are preparing for the arrival by boarding up businesses with plywood or storm shutters.

Sandbags are being piled at doorway entrances. Traffic is bumper to bumper in Louisiana as authorities urge people to evacuate and seek higher ground.

The NHC warned that "life-threatening storm surge" of up to 11 feet is possible in some places.

It will be the 10th hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. this season, setting a new record.
