New Jersey-based multinational corporation, Johnson & Johnson, announced on Monday that it had temporarily paused clinical trials for its candidate COVID-19 vaccine due to an unexplained illness in a study participant.
During the company's third quarter earnings call on Tuesday, Mathai Mammen, global head of research said, “It’s not at all unusual for unexpected illnesses to occur in large studies over their duration.” The illness, he added, may have nothing to do with the experimental vaccine.
