Nearly 103,000 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the U.S. on Wednesday marking the highest single-day number since the pandemic began, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The country has reported more than 600,000 new coronavirus cases in just the past week.

The number of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 also reached a record high in 16 states on Wednesday.

In North Dakota, there are only six intensive care beds available in the entire state.

This spike comes as some health experts warn about a cold-weather surge in COVID-19 cases.

“All the stars are aligned in the wrong place as you go into the fall and winter season, with people congregating at home indoors. You could not possibly be positioned more poorly,” Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said recently.

At least 33 states in the U.S. now require people to wear masks in public. Some cities have imposed nightly curfews including Miami, Florida, El Paso, Texas and Pueblo, Colorado, amid concerns over the virus.

On Tuesday, as Americans waited for the 2020 U.S. election results, demonstrators gathered outside the White House on election night. Not everyone wore a face mask or kept social distance.

As of Thursday, Johns Hopkins University reported more than 9.5 million confirmed cases and more than 234,000 deaths.
