An ambitious global effort to procure COVID-19 vaccines and ensure fair and equal distribution across rich and poor nations is facing an enormous uphill battle. 

The Covax initiative backed by the United Nations now has more than 185 countries on board, but it remains acutely underfunded and is up against countries said to be hoarding the most promising vaccines. 

At the G20 summit this weekend, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hopes to change that.
