In the U.S., new records in the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19, and there's no relief in sight, the number of new infections rising again after a holiday dip.

The surge comes as the White House is pressing federal regulators to approve a vaccine, and as health officials are deciding who will be first in line to receive it.
