A new targeted stay-at-home order has taken effect in several parts of California, as the state grapples with record numbers of new coronavirus infections and hospitalizations.

The new state mandate urges everyone to stay at home except for their most essential needs, in regions where the local hospitals’ ICU capacities fall below 15%.

The measure aims to curb the spread of the virus throughout the holiday period, but it remains unclear how exactly it will be enforced.
