After seeing the deadliest week since the COVID-19 pandemic started in the U.S., many states are now facing alarming surges in cases from holiday gatherings.

The U.S. reported more than 4,000 COVID-19 deaths on Thursday. Some hospitals around the country are are at risk of being overwhelmed.

Now, public health officials are bracing for the consequences from Wednesday's storming of the U.S. Capitol. 

"You had largely unmasked individuals in a non-distanced fashion, who were all through the Capitol," said Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield. He also said it "will probably lead to a significant spreading."
