President Trump’s decision not to attend Joe Biden’s inauguration is another act of defiance in a presidency defined by breaking conventions.

An incumbent visibly handing off to his successor signifies the peaceful transfer of power in the U.S.

But for many the events of last week have already upended that tradition.
