Poland's near-total abortion ban went into effect on Wednesday, triggering new protests.

Now, women can only get legal abortions if their life or health are at risk or if the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest.

Until now, about 98% of all legal abortions in the country were because of fetal malformations, according to the Associated Press.

Thousands have protested since a Polish top court ruled the abortion of congenitally-malformed fetuses unconstitutional three months ago.
