Gender-based violence has increased around the world during COVID-19

The United Nations says there’s ample evidence from around the world that gender-based violence has increased amid the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

It’s even described the spike in domestic abuse as a “shadow pandemic.” The numbers are certainly high in Latin America.

Colombia​’s Observatory for Femicide reported 568 women have been killed between January and November of 2020. Studies are still underway to understand the level of impact the pandemic and isolation orders have on the femicide rate.
