Martial law has been declared in large areas of Myanmar as massive protests against the military takeover continue.
Myanmar’s General Min Aung Hlaing spoke Monday in a televised address, declaring that this time things will be “different” from the army’s previous reign, which ended in 2011 after 49 years in power. “After the tasks of the emergency period are completed, free and fair multi-party general elections will be held according to the constitution,” he said. “The winning party will be transferred to state duty according to democratic standards.”
Tens of thousands of people gathered to protest the military takeover Monday, demanding the release of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
