Ghana received its first COVID-19 shots from COVAX, the World Health Organization’s global vaccine-sharing program Wednesday. A flight carrying 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India landed in the capital Accra. The doses were ferried to refrigerated storage sites ahead of Ghana’s vaccination campaign, scheduled to kick off March 2.

The COVAX initiative is designed to ensure a fairer distribution of coronavirus vaccines between rich and poor nations. COVAX says it will deliver two billion doses to its members by the end of 2021.
