On March 13, 2020, police conducted a botched no-knock warrant on the home of Breonna Taylor, a Kentucky EMT who was asleep with her boyfriend. Thinking there was a break-in, her boyfriend fired his gun. Taylor was killed when police fired back.

The suspect police were searching for was already in custody. Her killing, and later the death of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer, sparked months-long civil unrest in the U.S. and pushed the Black Lives Matter movement onto the international stage.
