COVID-19: EU proposes travel certificate, Brazil's health service faces collapse

The European Union is proposing a COVID-19 certificate to allow people to move more freely, in attempts to boost the summer tourist season.

Known as a Digital Green Certificate, it would allow people in EU nations to travel within the union if they have proof of immunization, a negative test result or documented recovery from the virus.

The certificate would be free and available in digital or paper format.

The U.S. Biden administration announced a plan to use $2.25 billion toward health equity issues related to COVID-19.

The money aims to help expand health services and reduce disparities by increasing testing access and contact tracing for underserved and high risk communities.

Two COVID-19 strains first found in California are now "variants of concern," according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC says the variants might be about 20% more contagious and some treatments might be less effective against the strains.

With more than 25% of its population having received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot, Chile is among the leaders in vaccine rollout.

COVID-19 units in 25 out 27 of Brazilian states are at or above 80% capacity, the BBC reports.
