Monday is National Vietnam War Veterans Day in the United States. The date is significant because on March 29, 1973, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disbanded and the last U.S. combat troops departed the Republic of Vietnam.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Monday morning to honor the service members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War.

Estimates of the total number of deaths in the Vietnam War vary widely, but some, like the British Medical Journal 2008, estimate over 3.8 million human casualties between 1955 and 1975.
