India documented a new daily coronavirus case record for the fifth straight day with 352,991.
People have been forced to seek treatment as hospitals across the country run out of beds. Many are turning to the black market where prices for medicines, oxygen cylinders, and concentrators have skyrocketed.
New Delhi extended the coronavirus lockdown by one week, until May 3.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that his administration would set up 551 oxygen generation plants in “every district to ensure adequate oxygen availability.”
The Biden administration said it will immediately make raw materials needed for vaccines available to India. According to the White House, the administration will also provide oxygen-related supplies and therapeutics.
Thousands were outraged after the Indian government ordered Twitter to remove posts critical of their handling of the virus. A spokesperson for the social media company confirmed it blocked some material from being viewed in India.
