Why is Brazil being hit with two crises at once?  As the country approaches 400 thousand COVID-19 deaths, tens of millions of Brazilians are going hungry and depend now on donations for their daily meals.

Lucrecia Franco, in Rio de Janeiro, reports.

Since March of last year, volunteers from Brazil’s Central Union of Favelas– CUFA have been receiving and delivering tons of food donations to some of the hardest hit areas of the country.

But with the pandemic-induced recession continuing, businesses and individuals are increasingly unable to contribute to the charity.

There are about 19 million Brazilians have experienced hunger during the pandemic, according to data compiled by a network of Research in Food security – Penssa.

Also, nearly 117 million,  more than half the population are living with some level of food insecurity.

Here are some distressing pictures of famine from Brazil.
