COVID-19 is raging through Latin America as the region approaches the grim milestone of one million coronavirus deaths.

An aggressive COVID-19 variant that was first identified in Brazil has been detected in more than 30 countries and is rampaging through Latin America.

Known as P.1, the variant has even hit Uruguay - once considered a model for controlling the spread of the virus.

The country of 3.5 million is now one of the world’s worst COVID-19 hot spots with P.1 blamed for 3 out of 4 new infections.

P.1 is estimated to be responsible for three out of four new infections. Colombia is seeing intensive-care units at 90% capacity in the capital, Bogotá, and across the country.
