The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every June 17. 

The U.N. came up with the idea back in 1994 with the aim to raise awareness of desertification and drought across the globe.

Extreme water shortages can cripple local communities when it comes to agriculture, wildlife and the environment.
