Communities around the U.S. are celebrating Juneteenth today, with the added achievement of the day becoming a federal holiday.

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued two years prior, June 19th 1865 marks the end of slavery for everyone in the U.S.

It's a day many activists have worked to raise awareness about for decades.
