Famine forces people to eat bugs in Madagascar

A massive drought has hit the south of Madagascar. Communities are on the verge of starvation. All the while, a record number of people became millionaires during the pandemic. That’s right, more than 5 million people became millionaires in 2020 according to Credit Suisse. At the same time, the poor just became poorer. People in Switzerland, Australia, and Sweden all saw the largest wealth gains. While residents of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and China’s Hong Kong lost the most wealth.

So why is Madagascar doing so poorly? Years of drought have transformed vast swathes of arable land into wasteland.mUnexpected sandstorms have buried crops and pastures. Overall climate issues have pounded the large African island into famine. And aid agencies warn the situation will get worse.

Scientists warn climate change make large areas of Earth unlivable. As warmer weather spreads, could we see more drought and famine?
