Are you still wearing jeans, blazers or high heels? Work from home has changed the way we think about fashion. People are ditching uncomfortable clothes, to soft and comfy sweatpants. Find out more about the new wave of, casualization.

"From a historical perspective, clothing very much is about power and power structures and hierarchies. And we've always used clothes to denote who has power in a particular group, organization or community," said Joshua Williams, Assistant Professor at Parson's school of Design.

"The biggest change that happened due to COVID-19 and fashion is that we just weren't going out as much anymore and we just didn't have need for all the clothes that we would normally need," Williams added.

"I think we realized how comfortable clothes could be. The big shift is just a push towards comfort. And then maybe we were all wearing shorts or sweatpants below because nobody could see us on zoom."

"We're going to see colors emerge, but all of that with comfort. I think all of these things are going to be less tailored because I think we're all coming out of this looking for things that have a little bit more shape, a little bit more volume to them, bigger sleeves, bigger shoulders and things like that," said Williams.

2021 also witnessed a 5% drop in retail sales.

"I think this will have a ripple effect around issues of sustainability, issues around personality and individuality and how we express ourselves. So I'm I'm hopeful that this is an opportunity to kind of take control of fashion rather than fashion, take control of us."
