The death toll surrounding riots and unrest in South Africa has risen to 212 on Friday, and an estimated $1 billion worth of goods has been looted from KwaZulu-Natal, a municipality that includes the city of Durban.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said Friday he would not allow “anarchy and mayhem.” The unrest was sparked by the jailing of former South African president Jacob Zuma.
