Confronted with soaring electricity prices, a group of neighbors in one of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, or slums, has launched the country’s first solar energy cooperative.

Developed by a nonprofit organization, the project is helping residents save money while increasing awareness the about the benefits of solar power.
