Muslims participating in the Hajj to Mecca this year experienced a downsized gathering under significant restrictions for the second year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.  Worshippers were required to present a ‘hajj card’ which allowed them contactless access to religious sites in Saudi Arabia, including to the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest shrine.

Only 60,000 people, all citizens and residents of Saudi Arabia, were selected to attend the Hajj.

Muslims celebrated worldwide the Eid al-Adha, or “Feast of Sacrifice” this week, which marks the end of the annual Hajj to Mecca and is celebrated with prayers, feasts and sacrifices in remembrance of Abraham’s readiness to sacrifice his son.
