Volunteers work to clean up canals of Xochimilco

Amid the massive urban sprawl of Mexico City, a slice of green stands out.

These are the centuries-old gardens of Xochimilco, which date back to the Aztec era.

Its maze of canals still draws tourists from around the world. But the surrounding city and the pollution it brings is threatening the green space. Efforts are underway to clean it up.
