Residents of the island of Evia in Greece escaped forest fires after they were evacuated by at least 10 ships on Saturday.

About 1,400 people were taken off Evia island. Other fires in ancient Olympia and the Peloponnese also threatened homes. A fire just north of Athens was also still burning. 

Meanwhile, community members in Greenville, California, in the United States are still reeling from the largest single wildfire in the state's history. Known as the Dixie Fire, the blaze has so far destroyed 268 homes and structures and is threatening 14,000 other buildings.

Communities around the world are battling wildfires that have increased in frequency and intensity due to dry hot temperatures climate change.

To make matters worse, the fires release even more carbon emissions into the atmosphere which further accelerate climate change.
