Rare summer flooding put Venice, Italy's Piazza San Marco in ankle-deep water overnight.

The city is usually hit by "acqua alta" (high water) in fall and winter and can cause millions in damages.

With Sunday night's flooding, people danced and splashed in the plaza.

High water incidents in the city are caused by several factors that have gotten worse over time because of climate change.

Venice now has a flood barrier but it activates for tides more than 130 cm (4 ft 3 inches).
