U.S. employers begin to ask jobseekers about their vaccination status

Getting the jab may soon be less a matter of personal choice and more of an economic necessity.

According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. employers are increasingly enquiring about the vaccination status of new hires. The trend is small but growing, with the number of U.S. job postings making vaccination a requirement doubling over the past month.

The jobs ranged from accountancy and IT vacancies to McDonalds and the Walt Disney Co.

Right now, about 1,200 job postings out of every million posted, include a vaccination requirement. Many of the job descriptions don't explicitly mention the Coronavirus vaccine, but the broader context suggests that the COVID-19 vaccine is what employers are looking for.

Before Coronavirus vaccines were widely available in the U.S., only healthcare jobs typically included a vaccination requirement.

Some postings offer alternatives to vaccination, such as regular testing and mask wearing.  Others mention that existing employees have been vaccinated and offer a bonus to successful applicants willing to follow suit.

The increased number of job postings requiring vaccination comes as the Delta variant sparks a surge in new Coronavirus cases centered on southern U.S. states.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the seven-day moving average of U.S COVID-19 cases is 114,190. Just over 50% of the U.S. population has been fully vaccinated.
