At least 40 dead in Turkish floods

At least 40 people are dead in Turkey after flash floods and mudslides hit the Black Sea coastline. Search-and-rescue operations are underway, as people remain trapped in collapsed buildings.

The Kastamonu district, which includes Bozkurt, has been hit the hardest. One village in the area received about 45cm of rainfall in less than three days.

About 2,250 people have been evacuated across the region. At least five bridges have washed away, leaving roads impassable.

While climate scientists say that climate change is creating extreme weather events, geologists in Turkey blamed this flooding on interference with rivers and improper construction.

The flooding comes just as Turkish authorities said they had gotten deadly wildfires under control in the southern coastal regions. The blazes, fueled by a heat wave, have been burning for two weeks.
