Muslims around the world took part in celebrations for Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Some Shiite sects showed their sadness over the killing of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad with self-flagellation, a practice not condoned by most Muslims.
Some Muslims in Indian-controlled Kashmir were detained by Indian forces for going against a ban on the procession which India placed on Kashmiris in 1989. Police didn't give the exact number of detentions from the procession.
