California has been hit with the largest wildfire in the state’s history, so why are emergency crews starting more fires? Backfire operations, also called ‘burnouts’ are controlled fires along the path of a blaze that destroys potential fuel for the oncoming fire.
When the wildfire reaches the already burned border, it has nothing left to ignite and is put out.
