It's been almost 18 months since the coronavirus pandemic forced many people to shift to remote work.

With vaccinations rising and infection rates dropping in the U.S. this spring, hopes were mounting that a return to the office was imminent this September. 

But then, the Delta variant arrived upending many of those plans.
