Mexican President Manuel Lopez Obrador gave the annual 'Grito de Dolores,' the cry of Dolores, signifying the nation's independence from Spain, from the National Palace to kickoff celebrations.
September 16 marks Mexico's Independence Day.
The nation's capital held a military parade and other celebrations took place around the country.
'El Grito' is a yearly tradition that occurs at midnight on the day of independence.
It refers to a call to arms against the Spanish, that Father Miguel Hidalgo gave on Sept. 16. 1810 in Dolores, Mexico.
