Indian farmers go on national strike over agricultural reforms

Farmers in India took part in a nationwide strike against the central government's agricultural reforms, 10 months after a set of controversial laws were introduced.

Tens of thousands of farmers have camped out on major highways around the capital, New Delhi, since the law passed.

The legislation, introduced in September last year, deregulates the agriculture sector and allows farmers to sell produce to buyers beyond government-regulated wholesale markets, where growers are assured of a minimum price, making small farmers vulnerable.

The government says the reforms mean new opportunities and better prices for farmers.
