When the Taliban recaptured Kabul and claimed power over Afghanistan, there was a growing concern that the government allow for a safe haven for a resurgent Al-Qaeda, among other terror groups.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin has warned that Al-Qaeda could reform very soon, even within two years, if left unchecked.

Ahmad Shah Mohibi, Founder and President of Rise to Peace, a non-profit organization that researches and educates people about terrorism and extremism around the world, says that it could happen much quicker than expected.

He explains how Al-Qaeda has been able to keep a foothold in Afghanistan even after the Taliban was toppled in 2001 and how quickly it could regroup within the country. He also details what’s at stake and what is needed from the international community to combat this threat.
