A major oil spill off the coast of Southern California has contaminated beaches and parts of the Pacific Ocean after up to 131,000 gallons of crude oil may have leaked from a ruptured pipeline last weekend.

The water was closed to swimmers Friday in Newport Beach, California  as crews race to clean up the oil before it spreads into the protected wetlands.
