How much airlines lose when flights are canceled

After 3,000+ flight cancellations, #SouthwestAirlines CEO apologized to customers and operations are returning to normal. 

As the airline industry tries to overcome pandemic challenges and other disruptions, how much do airlines lose when they cancel flights? 

The International Air Transport Association is expecting $51.8B losses in 2021. 

Eleven of the largest U.S. carriers are expected to see a combined operating loss of $694M for the third quarter. 

COVID-19 challenges, labor disputes, bad weather, and air traffic control issues are some factors driving costs. The COVID-19 crisis has also left airlines with a mountain of debt.
