Nearly 3,000 migrants, including young children, from Central America, South America and Haiti are moving north in a caravan through Mexico after leaving the southern city of Tapachula, where many had been waiting in limbo for their asylum applications to be processed for over a year.
The migrants stopped Wednesday at a rest area in Huixtla before continuing to Mexico City where they hope to successfully apply for asylum and refugee status.
Mexican authorities say they have received over 90,000 asylum claims this year. The caravan pushed through a highway checkpoint in Tapachula aiming to block their path on Saturday.
Activists say the caravan is more of a demonstration and that they are asking to be allowed to stay in the country in a legal and organized away.
