The Brazilian government has failed to protect indigenous people, according to an annual report from the Catholic Church's Indigenous Missionary Council. The report indicates murders of indigenous people rose 61% and land invasions rose 137%. It blames the Brazilian government for not only failing to protect these groups but also pushing legislation that would open up their land to mining, oil and gas and other industries.
While one-third now live in urban areas, 900,000 indigenous people live in Brazil. With land claims at a standstill in the federal government, of the 1,289 reservations in Brazil, 832 are waiting for official recognition.
