Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India said his government will withdraw three controversial farm laws, conceding to yearlong protests in the streets by the country’s farmers, concerned over how the laws would affect their livelihoods.

Modi said that the repeal procedure will begin this month in Parliament, and urged the farmers to return to their homes.

“Let’s start afresh,” he said in a televised address on Friday.

People could be seen celebrating on the outskirts of New Delhi on Friday.
