A study conducted by supply chain research firm Stand.earth Research Group, examined the link between major fashion brands and their contributions to the deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.

The study looked at major fashion brands’ connections to tanneries and other companies’ involvement in leather production.

The study notes that the cattle industry is the single largest driver of Amazon deforestation, with the leather industry being one of the most lucrative for Brazil, accounting for $1.1 billion in revenue for 2020.

Over 100 brands were linked with the supply chain connections that have led to the Amazon deforestation. Over fifty brands have connections for Brazil’s largest leather exporter, JBS, which has been accused of engaging in deforestation.

This includes shoe brands like Dr. Martens, Adidas, New Balance, Puma, and Nike and clothing brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Guess, Lacoste, Ralph Lauren.
