Two journalists became the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021, receiving their awards Friday in an elaborate ceremony in Oslo City Hall in Norway.

Laureates Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia gave impassioned lectures on their separate efforts toward freedom of expression and the importance of freedom of the press.

Their shared win also highlighted the global value of independent reporting, and the need to protect the world’s journalists from attacks, harassment, and killings.

Norway’s Queen Sonja, King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon greeted the laureates during the award ceremony.
