The U.S. state of California is enacting a mandatory residential food waste composting program in January, designed to keep its landfills clear of food waste.

Food waste breaks down and emits methane, a greenhouse gas even more damaging to the environment in the short-term than carbon emissions from fossil fuels.

Scraps like egg shells and banana peels will be collected by municipalities in green waste bins and converted to compost for gardening or biogas- an energy source similar to natural gas.

Both resources created from food waste will combat the environmental effects of methane.
