There were at least 105 people still unaccounted for as of Monday morning in the U.S. state of Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear said, following what he described as the “worst tornado event in the history of our commonwealth.”
Tornadoes ripped through more than 18 counties in the state on Friday, and also hit in five other states across the U.S. Midwest.
There have been 64 confirmed deaths in Kentucky, with victims ranging from 5 months to 86 years old.
The governor said it could be weeks until the full death toll is known.
Many who lost their homes are staying in motels, state parks and shelters prepared by volunteers.
The electric grid is out of service and natural gas has been turned off in southwest Kentucky for safety.
